Dr Mathew McCauley
Dr Mathew McCauley received his undergraduate degree in 1996 in the United States, before undertaking post-graduate studies in the United Kingdom. Following his masters degree in psychology, he completed his doctoral degree in clinical psychology, which entailed specialist inpatient and outpatient rotational training in the National Health Service. His specialist residency was based within the UK Ministry of Defence, based at the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine and RAF Brize Norton. Dr McCauley served for six years as a consultant clinical psychologist with the United States Air Force, supporting US military operations overseas, during which time he specialized in liaison mental health, clinical health psychology, occupational mental health, and medico-legal services. He continues to serve as a military psychologist, in addition to his private work at the Blackrock Clinic. Dr McCauley is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychology at Trinity College Dublin.
Service Description
Dr McCauley offers mental health assessments for patients over the age of 18. His service is suitable for patients who present with varying problems, which can include concerns with anxiety, mood, impulse control, attention and concentration, physical health difficulties, and adjustment. As a clinical psychologist, Dr McCauley does not prescribe medication, but works closely with GPs and psychiatrists in supporting patient's psychological and pharmacological needs. There is no inpatient psychiatry service at the Blackrock Clinic, but such services are available in the local community.
What to Expect
Patients are often referred to Dr McCauley via their GP or Consultant. However, self-referrals are also welcomed. The first appointment with Dr McCauley involves an initial assessment, which will generally last for an hour. Follow up or review appointments for therapy or consultation will last for approximately 50 minutes. Prior to the first appointment, patients will be asked to kindly complete some paperwork, which will outline their background, difficulties, etc. The first appointment involves a collaborative review of the patient's history and concerns, and appropriate confidentiality is maintained.
Qualifications
Dr McCauley is a registered clinical psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (UK) and the British Psychological Society (UK). He is also registered with the European Federation of Psychological Associations (Belgium), the Psychological Society of Ireland, and Tricare, Department of Defense (USA). He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and hold Fellowships with the Higher Education Academy (UK), the Royal Society of Medicine (UK), and the Royal Academy of Medicine (Ireland). Dr McCauley is a Chartered Scientist with the Science Council (UK), and is a member of the Faculty of Clinical Health Psychology, BPS (UK), the Society of Behavioural Medicine (UK), and the American Psychological Association (USA).
